Thermally modified hemlock features uniform grain that becomes highly pronounced after treatment. The thermal modification process darkens its naturally pale tone into uniquely varied and prominent color streaks, ranging from golden amber to deep roasted brown. Alongside its visual transformation, the baked wood develops a distinct, earthy scent reminiscent of a campfire. Together, these rich aromas and dynamic color patterns create a deep sensory appeal. Over time, with exposure to UV, the lumber will transition to a natural silver-gray patina color. Thermal modification also reduces pH to ~4-6, which requires solvent based top-coats and stainless steel fasteners.
